A (long) limerick for Katie and Ben When our time in Oxford had just begunI walked into Rhodes House, knowing no oneIt was October 2013We were so young, so greenBut lucky me, I was seated next to Ben HunnAt that point, Ben was in Oxford aloneBecause his fairer half hadn’t yet flownLittle did we knowHow our friend group would growWhen graced with the arrival of Katie StoneAt Royal Ascot we watched horses competeWe had parties and singalongs on Stockmore StreetWe’d too often don gownsFor nights out on the townWith adventures, our lives were repleteAs we got deeper into the Oxford grindWe got used to the dreaming spires’ shineKatie nursing in otolaryngologyBen researching in neurologyNew entertainment we needed to findSome of these were creative endeavorsWhich particularly brought Katie and me pleasureFrom ceilidhs to craftsOr the occasional danceOr making extreme numbers of gingerbread houses togetherOther diversions took a more active steerWith Ben and Katie bringing both athleticism and cheerFrom our half marathon featsTo climbing Arthur’s seatTo the rise and fall of my brief footy careerThese memories now feel quite long agoWe’re all grown up, getting married, you knowBut to have shared all those yearsWith such unforgettable peersForged a friendship we’ll never outgrowBen and Katie were anchors of our Oxford familyTen years later, they remain a center of gravityA foundation that, thenceforth,Will remain a source of strength and warmthMuch like the heated concrete floors of their new house in TassieNow, I’m sure this is nothing new to this crewWho from pretty much every continent flewTo this beautiful spotTo watch these two tie the knotIt’s the least either of them would do for youSo please raise your glass once againTo wish these two wonderful humansMany more years in storeBeautiful as the ones that came beforeA toast -- to dear Katie and Ben— Nina Yancy
